Winning writer pure poetry in motion

Anything - such as a novel, a movie or even a news item - can become the theme for literary creation for Lam

The results of the 6th Intervarsity Creative Writing Competition were announced recently.

The competition, which is held every two years, received a total of 384 entries - the largest-ever number.

Entries came from the eight local universities, Hang Seng Management College and Shue Yan University .

I had the opportunity to speak with Lam Chi-wa, who proved an outstanding participant in the competition.

The second-year Chinese Language and Literature student excelled in as many as three categories.

Competing in the event for the first time, Lam took second place for prose and a merit prize for poetry.

His entry in the short- story category was also praised by the panel of judges.

Lam said he has been interested in writing poetry since childhood.

When he was in Form Two, his mathematics teacher recommended a book of poems, which made him fall in love with such writing.

He now composes about 10 poems every month and has built up a collection of more than 700 original works.

Lam has taken part in several poetry competitions.

The first event he participated in was the Youth Literary Awards, when he was still in Form Two.

Lam took top prize and since then he has taken part in all sorts of writing competitions each year.

Hong Kong Baptist University Language Centre assistant professor Wu Yin-ching has been instructing Lam in the art of poetry, and the youngster is much inspired by her.

It was the words ``Don't disappoint me'' from Wu that spurred Lam to try his hand at creative work other than poetry.

Lam said Wu likes his poems very much and is also impressed with his talent.

Whenever he finds the time, the young poet posts his works on Facebook and Wu often logs in to leave her comments.

Lam feels he is not very patient, so writing poetry suits him better as he gets it done faster than he would if he were writing prose or short stories.

Lam feels poetry is an integral part of his life - as natural as breathing.

He also says his writings are inspired by what he sees and thinks about in his day- to-day life.

Anything - such as a novel, a movie or even a news item - may become the theme of literary creation.

Lam plans to be busy with his passion even after he graduates - as his aim is to become a freelance writer.

I have noticed that young people today like to share their views on their personal lives by writing on social networking websites or forums.

I would like to encourage youngsters who love writing to take part in literary competitions and be inspired to take their place among the future talents of our territory.
