excuse me. can you really tell from someone's picture if they're dead or not?
someone's been pulling your leg.

On the night of 14 November 1940, the German Luftwaffe bombed the English city of Coventry. The raid destroyed more than 50,000 houses and shops, and killed 554 citizens and wounded 865. The 14th century St Michael's Cathedral, Coventry's most famous building, was destroyed.Churchill knew beforehand, through Ultra* intercepts, that Coventry was about to be bombed, but to evacuate the population or to engage in great strength the bomber fleet as it approached, was to tell the Germans that their Enigma security system had been penetrated. The British prime minister therefore made no preparations for the raid. This was the only way to protect Ultra, one of the most important weapons of victory in the whole war.

On Christmas Day 1941, when Hong Kong surrendered to the Japanese, around 200 drunken Japanese approached St Stephen's College, now a sanctuary for 96 wounded soldiers. Barring the front door was the head medic, Dr George Black."You can't come in here," he said,"this is a hospital." With deliberate aim, a soldier raised his rifle and shot him through the head. In the wards, the Japanese ripped the bandages off the wounded patients, and plunged their bayonets into the amputated arms and legs before finishing them off with a bullet while the nursing staff looked on helplessly. The female nurses were then led away, to a fate one can easily imagine.Similar atrocities were committed at various locations throughout Hong Kong, including the rape of thousands of women and young girls.

So I make myself the measure of photographic 'knowledge.’ What does my body know of photography? I observed that a photograph can be the object of three practices (or of three emotions, or of three intentions): to do, to undergo, to look. The Operator is the Photographer. The Spectator is ourselves, all of us who glance through collection of photographs-in magazines and newspapers, in books, albums, archives...And the person or thing photographed is the target, the referent, a kind of little simulacrum, any eidolon emitted by the object, which I should like to call the Spectrum of the Photograph, because this word retains, through its root, a relation to 'spectacle' and adds to it that rather terrible thing which is there in every photograph: the return of the dead.

原文:
If you say ‘war’ just once more, I’ll go in the house and shut the door. I’ve never gotten so tired of any one word in my life as ‘war,’ unless it’s ‘secession.’ Pa talks war morning, noon and night, and all the gentlemen who come to see him shout about Fort Sumter and States’ Rights and Abe Lincoln till I get so bored I could scream! And that’s all the boys talk about, too, that and their old Troop. There hasn’t been any fun at any party this spring because the boys can’t talk about anything else. I’m mighty glad Georgia waited till after Christmas before it seceded or it would have ruined the Christmas parties, too. If you say ‘war’ again, I’ll go in the house.('Gone With The Wind'Part 1 Chapter 1)
